Desperately Holding On – Samir Hazlehurst

the ale-bubbled coat of a library book –
swaddled as if to say

we trust you not with the condition,
but the scripture of this tome – the contents
not the cover, may take flavours from your home
fold over corners if you must
we entrust you with the tang of your morning cup of rust,
not its spill – take notice, if you will

of the fast dawn-date
which bubbles up as if to say

this is your deadline
upon this day, you must waive or waver, reader

sonnet-sickened, yet I lift and take another sip
